MORE THAN THIRTY of the best-known, most beloved melodies of Hungary are performed
by Europe's popular Benedict Silberman, his chorus and orchestra, in this extraordinary
hi-fi long-playing album.
Actually recorded in Europe, "Hungarian Moods" runs the gamut, as they say in Budapest,
from sad and tear-prevoking melodies to gay, danceable, gypsy-tinged czardas — each
one superbly played by the Silberman musicians. The record opens and closes with
I Love Budapest. Between the two performances are Hungarian (and several
celebrated Central European) songs known throughout the world.
A highly emotional Gypsy Violin Lament is followed uy Ritkn Buza ("When
the good wheat is scarce, so are the beautiful girls") and then Maestro Silberman and his
fifty musicians offer Robert de Kers' Gypsy Song, a medley of festive folk tunes
entitled Happy Hearts and Czak Egy Kislany Van A Vilagon ("There's but one
girl in the world"), the lovely theme employed by Sarasate in his memorable Zigeunerweisen.
Thirty-eight seconds of Hungarian
cymbalon lead to Minek A Szokc Ennekem, which in translation to English
asks, "why should I love blonde when I'm in love with the brunette?" Then, in quick succession
come Puszta Czardás, Te Adtad Nekem Az Elsö Almatlan Ejsmakát
("You gave me the first night of love"), Tezona, Exért A Legényert Nem
Adnék Egy Krajcart ("The lad is not worth a cent"),
Buda-Czárdas, Akácos Ut ("lilac road"), a potpourri of beloved
Hungarian and Rumanian themes and finally — The Black Canary.
And thus Side One is concluded.
The great gypsy composer "Lavotta" of the eighteenth century inspired the opening theme of Side Two, Lavotta's Serenade. Maestro Silberman then segues into Szép Asszonynak Kurizdini, followed by Szeretnék Mdjus Ejszakdján ("I would love to pluck all the lilacs in one night of May"). Another flower song follows, Szep A Rózsan, but the "rose" is a young lady.
The fifth melody of Side Two is the extremely melodic A Faluban Nines Tobb Kislany,
and then comes Repülj Fecském ("Fly, my swallow, to warmer lands").
Again, a brief cymbalon solo and then Hejre Kati, the song about a million
stars shir.uig, that ingeniously combines two other distinguished Hungarian
songs, En Vagyok A Falü Rossza Egyedül and Vörös Bort Ittam Az
Este, the latter a drinking tune. The lively Devil's Czárdas, the
fisherman's song Hullamzo-Balaton and Olyán Edes follow.
"The little house with the green windows" is the translation of Zoldablakos Kicsi
Ház. And then the Hungarian melody So Little Time which the great
Brahms used. The Gypsy's Hora and I Love Budapest conclude the program
dramatically.
"Hungarian Moods" is one of the more than one hundred long-playing, modern, high-fidelity
albums comprising the popular 'Capitol' of the World series - music imported from
far-off lands for the entertainment and edification of North Americans.
Benedict Silberman's chorus and orchestra also may be heard in Capitol's "Beloved Jewish
Music" album, T 10064, one of the most popular long-playing records of its kind ever
released.
