ON THE BACK OF THE JACKET:
It's Time for Chet...
You don't have to be a guitar buff to appreciate and enjoy the wonderful talent of Chet
Atkins and the vigor and breeziness of his happy-mood style. This is an album for anyone who
likes instrumental music with unusual verve and zest, and who responds to the craftsmanship
of a musician with complete mastery over his instrument.
Chet Atkins is known universally as "Mr. Guitar." In his talented hands, the guitar
transforms into more than a string instrument. It becomes an extension and an expression of
Chefs own feeling for the changing moods and tempos of songs. He can play any type of music,
and he imparts his own individualistic interpretation and treatment to whatever he plays,
from Bach to rock.
Chet was still in his early teens when he became a professional musician and played with
both the Dixieland Swingsters and the Bill Carlisle Orchestra at Radio Station WNOX,
Knoxville, Tennessee. He developed and honed his unusual style as his career broadened,
and he became radio star, recording artist, and featured member of the famous Grand Ole
Opry group.
Today, in addition to being a renowned guitarist, he is an arranger and composer of note,
and chief of RCA Victor's Nashville recording center. He teaches guitar, designs instruments
for other professionals, and is author of a guitar methods book. He also is in great demand
as a soloist and has made guest appearances with musical organizations ranging from jazz
bands to the Atlanta Symphony.
In this interesting collection, Chet Atkins demonstrates not only his varied guitar
technique, but his writing and arranging talents as well. No less than six of the twelve
selections included were composed, written and/or arranged by him.
He digs deeply into musical history—to 1917 and The Bells of St. Mary's—to demonstrate the
brightening effect of his guitar artistry on old favorites.
His style then changes rapidly—from fast and furious with Walkin' on Strings, to brisk and
jazzy with High Rockin' Swing, to bouncy and boogie with his own composition, Centipede
Boogie.
He laces sentiment with swing as he runs through an Atkins-arranged medley of Stephen
Foster favorites, then slows to emphasize the melody of the romantic ballad, Darling,
Je Vous Aime Beaucoup.
Whether slow or fast, romantic or jazz, rock or boogie, each note sparkles with unusual
brightness and gaiety as the talented fingers of Chet Atkins speak to the strings.
