Neapolitan Songs
Walk along the Via Vittorio Veneto, or down the faded, historic Spanish Steps at the Piazza di Spagna. If you are obviously female, older than 12 and under 75, you'll hear the rude whistles of admiring male Romans as you pass. If you're something special, you'll hear enthusiastic shouts of "che bellezza!" from the men standing around, or seated at tiny sidewalk tables at Caffé Greco.
All of which can prove distracting to a visiting couple—honeymooners in particular—as they observe the Eternal City in a happy haze. But it's all a part of Rome, a tradition, and after the first day the groom is resigned to the truth that his beloved is attractive and merits the noisy approval of masculine sidewalk audiences.
Rome is romantic. As a site for love even Paris, Rio and Mexico City are no more enchanting. Its hotels, its gentle climate, its mixture of antiquity and modernity all provide a rich physical setting for lovers. The sound of Italian talk, the aroma of Italian food and wine, the feel of the warm sun and gentle night breeze as one stands high on Terminillo — a refreshing 90 - minute drive from the city — are experiences designed to be shared by two in love.
Some 1,850,000 persons live in Rome today, and those who aren't passionately in love are (a) seeking a lover or (b) ogling passing signorine and thinking love. Detroit also boasts 1,850,000 residents. They talk automobiles. Renato Carosone plays music for Italian lovers. There are no orchestras in Rome more popular in clubs, or on records, than his. In this, his first album to be released in North America, Signer Carosone offers some of the music that has assisted —helped along—thousands of Italian romances. His piano, his singing, his choice of songs provide the perfectly authentic background atmosphere for a Honeymoon in Rome. Buon divertimento!
Versatile is the word for Renato Carosone, whose talents as a pianist, singer, composer, arranger and conductor ere respected and admired by musicians not only in Italy but throughout Western Europe as well.
Born in Naples in 1920—in the Piazza del Mercato where King Ferdinand II years before annually invited all the citizens to a public dinner—Carosone organized his quartet in 1949 in Naples. Neapolitans enjoyed his music, his daring experiments in new sounds, unusual comedy and flashy showmanship, and in no time the youthful Renato was making records for the Italian Pathe label.
Carosone's records caught on, big. Gracie Fields came in from London and hired his music to share the stage in Capri. Then, in 1951, Rome called Renato. By now his records were topping the Italian best-seller charts. His pngagement at the "Open Gate" in Rome led to Carosone's success on radio. With records, radio and occalional television appearances spreading his music—and his fame—Carosone's combo has recently been alternating between Rome and the Caprice in Milan. Summers, he forsakes the crowded city streets for engagements in Venice notably at the Casino del Lido.
Carosone has probably played music for more honeymooners than anybody — excluding the juke boxes in and around Niagara Falls. He, admittedly, has a strong empathy for young couples in love. He believes his music reflects his feelings.
"Honeymoon in Rome" marks Renato's first album to be prepared and released in North America. His music makes an interesting comparison to Pepe Villa's "Honeymoon in Mexico" album (Capitol T-10001) previously released here. All of Carosone's selections, incidentally, were actually recorded in Italy.
