This album is truly a Don Ho's collectors' item. Every song is representative of the very best that has come out of The Islands by way of Hawaii's Ambassador-at-large, Don Ho, and his remarkable crew, the "Swingin' Aliis!"
The Don Ho story, fantastic though it may be, is even more remarkable because his rise to stardom has been accomplished in such an incredibly short time. I feel well qualified to make this statement in that I've made most of his recordings, dating back to his very first, "THE DON HO SHOW 'LIVE' AT DUKE'S" several years ago.
His range of influence since then has shortened the trip to The Islands from thousands
of miles to just a few of his songs and a dream or two.
The music of Hawaii today is not ever to be confused with its music of yesterday,
with ukuleles or the sliding steel guitar. Rather, the music one hears over there is the
music of right now, tastefully complemented by touches of traditional flavor. They've
become, very simply, the Don Ho sound.
The Aliis are a vital part of this sound. Like The Islands themselves, The Aliis
have emerged out of the mid-Pacific as the forerunners of today's "sing-low, swing
hard" contemporary groups. As a matter of fact, they're one of the few groups to be
found anywhere who, although only five in number, sound like ten, since they often
play intricate instrumental passages and sing complicated counter-lines and harmonies at the same time.
Robin Wilson is another in a rapidly growing line of Don Ho discoveries, and her spectacular jump from the land of the unknown to Broadway to a recent Herb Alpert Special is another example of how Singer finds talent in the most unusual places!
As for Don himself, there's not much more to say except that, through his songs
and his music, he is not only the Voice of Hawaii but also the heart and soul of his beloved Homeland as well.
And so, without further Aloha, fire up a Mai Tai, sing a song of Singer, and take
the shortest trip ever by way of a Don Ho ear-lift to the Islands! - Sonny Burke
