ORDER OF PLAY:
The Suite from "Porgy and Bess"
Original Suite by the Composer

FROM THE INSIDE THE BOX:

The Suite from "PORGY & BESS" is recension and reduction of the three act opera to five distinct parts: I. Catfish Row; II. Porgy Sings; III. Fugue; IV. Hurricane; V. Good Morning Sistuh.

Gershwin fashioned it quickly early in January, 1936 by having his original orchestrations photocopied, these he cut to size, scoring the vocal lines now for orchestra. The suite was premiered at the Philadelphia Academy of Music on January 21, 1936, the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Alexander Smallens. The suite was to be something of a tantalization for the audience as the opera itself was coming to Philadelphia on tour six days later. The portents were not good, however. According to one critic, attendance at the concert was "disappointingly small", and the work itself was only "moderately well received".

(ibid)
IF you know George and Ira Gershwin story; you may know that in February, 1936 George himself conducted the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. - a turn away crowd descended upon Constitution Hall and cheered so enthusiastically that Gershwin said with amusements, "I have bowed so much that my back feels broken. Don't Washington people ever get enough?" While it may not have been received well in Philadelphia, PA., it was in Washington, D.C. - mostly in part, that in Washington, the 'Hall' was integrated. It did well after that in St. Louis, Boston - where ever it played.
