A CLOSER LOOK AT WOODY WOODBURY
One of America's funniest men, his secret is a unique form of adult humor indigenous to the night club floor. His instruments are a piano and an audience - and he manipulates the former as adroitly as he plays upon the latter.
He attacks the piano in much the same daredevil manner that he flew jet fighters for the Marine Corps in Korea . . . adds his own unpredietable embellishments to a conventional bit of song . . . and proceeds to break up his audience into detighted bits.
His style is relaxed and apparently effortless, but his polished insouciance was acquired the hard way. A piano player with a pick-up band at the age of 11, Woody turned pro after World War II in which he test-piloted fighter planes for the Marine Corps. Lynn Taylor, boss of the Bath & Tennis Club at Daytona, Florida, had watched, Woody clown around at parties, and told him if he ever wanted to work at it; after the war he had a iob for him.
Woody took up the offer in 1946, went on to another Daytona club the following year, and after a year at the Peacock and Embassy clubs in Jacksonville, moved to Miami. He was an almost immediate smash.
Woody Woodury is always great, but some nights he is greater than others. As Woody says: "Once in a decade a truly great comedian comes along . . . meanwhile I recommend me." This record was taped one night when he was at his greatest. Unexpurgated and unrehearsed, it's guaranteed to turn a dull evening into a small riot. Connoisseurs have acclaimed it the greatest boon to parties since the ice cube.
Not recommended for children, it's one of the best of all possible reasons for growing up. You will never hear this kind of performance on radio or see it on television, for obvious reasons. We know you will think this is one of the most unusual (and the funniest) recordings you have ever heard. It was recorded with microphones strategically placed to capture the voices of the audience without their knowledge. Have fun listening.
Taped at the Bahama Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, U. S. A. - no date given.
