Capp was an active drummer in the late days of the big band era and switched to working in the studio system in the early 1950s. He worked with Andre Previn during Previn's jazz piano trio period, and also performed live with George Shearing and the Dave Pell Octet. Among his many studio appearances are recordings with Neal Hefti, Billy May, Stan Getz, Annie Ross, and Shorty Rogers. In 1960-61, he was featured on a dozen albums of "Stereo in Motion" and "Sounds You See and Hear" on the Kimberly label. These albums were overdubs of an earlier series by Dave Pell and Jerry Gray (with the exception of the Prado and Mancini albums), with Capp providing percussion effects over the top, to cash in on the rage for percussion records. He has continued to work in Hollywood and since the late 1970s, has led a rare successful big band, the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut, with pianist Nat Pierce, with recordings on the Concord Jazz label.
