CYMBALON

Cymbalon
Cymbalon - box zither of Hungary, related to the English dulcimer.

Cimbalon is the Hungarian - and internationally most common - name for this instrument, especially popular in East European countries. In Dutch the instrument is called cimbaal.
The word is also written as cymbalom of cymbalum. The last name is normally used in France.
The instrument has many other international names, such as Tsambal in Romania, Tsymbali in the Ukraine, Sanduri in Greece and Dulcimer or Hammered Dulcimer in the US and the UK, although these last names also include other types of instruments.
A stringed musical instrument. It is a wooden box with strings stretched over it that are struck with small mallets. It has a range of about three octaves. The number of strings may vary. The Cymbalom is related to the psaltery, (stringed musical instrument with a flat soundboard over which a variable number of strings are stretched. Its origin was in the Middle East, and it is referred to in the Bible. It appeared in Europe in the 12th century, and flourished until the late Middle Ages. The term psaltery is sometimes used as a generic term for all plucked zithers having flat bodies. The instrument is similar to a hammered dulcimer but is plucked instead of hammered) and modern zither, (a flat sound box over which are stretched from 30 to 45 strings; these are plucked with the fingers and a plectrum. In the 18th century, one or both sides began to be curved to produce greater sonority. The term zither is also used generically for various instruments, including the dulcimer, the psaltery, and several Asian instruments. The dulcimer in use in the Kentucky mountains is, in fact, a zither. It originated in the Middle East and was adopted in Europe in the Middle Ages. It is known, in varying forms, in Turkey, Iran, China (including Tibet), and other parts of Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The popularity of the Cymbalom continued in Western Europe until the 17th century, when it sharply declined, though a German, Pantaleon Hebenstreit, enlarged it to make an instrument called the pantaleon in the early 18th century. It is still much used in Eastern Europe in Gypsy bands. In Appalachia a plucked Cymbalom very similar to the Zither is popular. It has an elongated hourglass shape and is held on the player's lap, or strapped so that the user may move about with it.
