FOR all enthusiastic gardeners, this fascinating book—written by a widely experienced
amateur—tells how to have a multitude of lovely bulb plantings outdoors from early
spring to late fall, (even in a quite small area), as well as blooms indoors from early
fall to late spring. It is lavishly illustrated with nineteen color illustrations,
twenty-four black and white photographs, and thirteen pages of line drawings.
From the delicate loveliness of springtime scillas and anemones' to the striking flamboy
ancy of summer cannas and richness of fall-blooming hardy cyclamen, the author introduces
you to the delightful world of bulbs.
She discusses all the popular bulbs—crocus and daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, lilies,
gladiolus, dahlias; and describes many of the "little bulbs" as well as the less familiar
— blazing star, winter aconite, snowdrop, acidanthera, and meadow saffron.
This book suggests a wide variety of uses for bulb plants—in the foreground of shrubbery,
blending in with a woodland scene, or livening up a border or perennial garden. One of
their greatest charms and benefits, the ability to merge into the total garden picture,
is thoroughly explored.
Full information is given on bulb heights, colors, and flowers; suitable time and duration
of bloom; climates; and sources of supply. The author advises in detail where bulbs may
be grown and the general care of plantings. Also included in this book is a useful list
of companion plants for bulbs; a practical chapter on how to exhibit blooms; and complete
planting charts, covering distance between plantings and depth in inches.
BEBE MILES, a resident of Wayne, Pennsylvania, is a free-lance writer who loves to garden. Her interest in flowers and growing things began at an early age.
She thought, at one time, of being an entomologist, botanist or naturalist; but later
decided to aim at a career in newspaper work.
After graduating from Syracuse University, School of Journalism, where she edited the
student daily newspaper, Mrs. Miles worked as a reporter on the Binghamton, New York, Sun;
and served a year as editor of the Syracuse Alumni Magazine.
Some years ago, after experimenting with bulbs and plants in several climates, the author
put her horticultural experience and knowledge to work by writing on gardening subjects.
Today, Mrs. Miles' byline appears in Flower Grower, Horticulture, Popular Gardening, and
Flower and Garden magazines.
"Here is an especially well written and orderly text for the amateur gardener who needs
to have practical instruction in the growing of many kinds of bulbs. Highly recommended."
"Whether your preference is for spring beauties, summerflowering lilies and gladioli, or
the dahlias and colchicum that bloom in the fall, or if you are an indoor gardener and
enjoy raising plants on the windowsill, you will find descriptions of new and different
varieties of your pets, and some companion species to join them."
"This practical and authoritative book, with its tested and proven advice and instructions,
will inspire you as well as guide you into the wonderful world of bulbs."
